The Great Lake Trail

The Great Lake Trail is an epic journey to invigorate your senses. It follows the shores of beautiful Lake Taupō, and takes in the stunning views across the water to the majestic volcanic mountains of the Tongariro National Park. Enjoy extensive native bush, dramatic scenery, serene lake views, powerful waterfalls, lyrical bird song and much more.

There are three parts to the trail, on the western side of Lake Taupo is a 30 km section (Waihora & Waihaha) and on the northern side is a further 41 km of track in two sections (Orakau & K2K and W2K & Headland). Cycle the whole track in two or three days or break it up and choose the sections/links you want to experience.

Chris Jolly Outdoors can organise your transfers to the start of the track and we offer the boat transfer from Waihora Bay (Kotukutuku Stream) to Kinloch or Kawakawa Bay where the Orakau or K2K links can be continued.

IMPORTANT: There is no link between the end of the Waihora link (Kotukutuku Stream in Waihora Bay) and the Orakau or K2K links.  A pre-arranged boat transfer is required to get between these areas or back to Kinloch.  Chris Jolly Outdoors has the EXCLUSIVE landing access to these beaches.

The Great Lake Trail is a two-way trail but for the best riding or walking experience, ride or walk in a west to east direction. Cycle the whole track in two – three days or break is up and choose the sections/links you want to enjoy.
